Is Wireless HDMI Dead? Belkin Flywire Gets Canned

071709_belkinsmall.jpgIt seems like Belkin will no longer be releasing its FlyWire wireless HDMI accessory, as confirmed by Belkin's PR announcement yesterday afternoon. Apparently "its retail price of $1,499 would be out of line given the current state of the economy." Which makes enough sense, but what does this mean for the current state of wireless HDMI? Perhaps we'll just have to stick with Apple TV and its alternatives for now...

Personally, we're a bit bummed to see the product canned. It seemed promising enough, giving consumers the ability to toggle between multiple audio and video sources (HDMI and analog) which were wirelessly beamed to a receiver across the room to your TV. This left options wide open for home theater systems to be split up into different sections around the room, eliminating an army of set top components to eat up an entire wall beside one's TV, and ultimately doing what we do best - reduce unsightly cable runs.

Other no shows this year include Philips' wireless HDMI kit (introduced in January 2007) and the Monster Express HD System (announced the Summer of 2008).

It'll hit the market when the price drops a bit more.

Are there any studies on how harmful or harmless wireless HDMI is?

Seeing as they'll probably be running on 2.4ghz or 5ghz, I'm guessing it wouldn't be any worse than your wireless keyboard and mouse.

Amazon.com has a Sony wireless HDMI transmitter for $275. They also have one from a company called Brite-View for $350.
