Plastolux's Modern Credenza Ikea Hack

052709plastolux01.jpgTyler of design and interior blog Plastolux wanted to build a credenza, inspired by a project done by x818.com we showcased over at Apartment Therapy NY, except Tyler's budget dictated he needed to look for some affordable alternatives for his home entertainment storage. Where else to look but the IKEA "As-Is" section for inspiration and resources! Partnering up one slightly damaged IKEA Lack bookshelf with one additional new one, Tyler added hairpin legs and plexiglass from a local plastic shop to construct an affordable and easy to follow inspiration for any home media center...

052709plastolux03.jpgTyler of Plastolux explains further details about the interior of his shelving solution:
"The verticals are in there. I cut them by 1 inch and set them back to make room for the track. There are three verticals per shelf. The bottom section has two of them and the top only has one right in the middle. The units come with a metal post with a threaded end for the verticals. I just took those and drilled some holes on the top of the bottom section then threaded in the post. I then made corresponding holes on the top and set the top on. Yes I did use some small L brackets just to sure everything up.

I have to say it is very strong. Trust me I have a 6 and a 3 year old so it has to be sturdy. I had originally bought a middle leg for this project but it was so sturdy I did not have to use it. I think it looks a lot better without anything in the middle anyway."

Quite nice results considering the modest $275 total cost of putting the media storage altogether. Check out more photos and details over at Plastolux. And yes, we're bugging him for a Tech Tour or Behind the Blog...we want to see more just as much as you all do!

This piece is truly inspiring. One can keep all the entertainment accessories in one place. it gives the room a very neat and clean look yet keeping all the stuff in one place.

great furniture piece!

Proof that cheap furniture can be amazingly beautiful and sturdy.

I love IKEA so much for the LACK bookcase/media center. It's the perfect minimal media center for under $100. I can't afford the solid wood entertainment centers of similar size/styling, so to be able to get an affordable but sturdy option from IKEA is a blessing. Add in the sliding door hack (and the extra tier) and you have an amazing piece.

I've been really considering installing sliding doors on my black-brown LACK single-tier entertaiment center.
I must say, I LOVE the legs on the one pictured above. Currently I have the standard IKEA wheels. I should replace them with some nice legs. I really don't use the wheels that much anyways. I think I'll put white doors and retro styled legs, like the one pictured (I'm going for Japanese/MCM mix in my room).
Quick question, does anyone know where I could find legs like the ones pictured? Or just in general.

The credenza looks very nice.

But shouldn't the TV sit on top of the it? As it is, the TV is set too high for proper viewing.

Here's a link to my innovative idea for stand mounted TV's.
