The Retro Mini-Media Center

Most media centers are small and black, which is kind of drab. It's hard to tell them apart since they just all look the same. Well, almost the same. Media center PCs are perfect to plug into your home theater system to manage your movies and TV shows in digital format. More and more homes have them nowadays, that's why I found this one so interesting. It is intricate and unique looking.

Thomas Thomassen created the Retro Mini-Media Center for his final major project for his BA in Modelmaking for Design and Media class at the Arts Institute at Bournemouth. He created a site to showcase his design, which includes a step-by-step process on how he did it. The last part of his site includes a great looking gallery. The only question that we have for Thomas is, when can we buy one?

This isn't really a DIY project, even though if Thomas completed this for a class. He created the casing from scratch and thus this build is a step above most DIY projects. Even so, the case looks sweet. It reminds us of a vintage Caddy in pastel tones. The actual media center is quite small. It's the size of an external USB drive, which is pretty tiny. Such a great-looking design should go into production immediately, even if it's only for the case. This is the type of computer that you'd like to show off to other people. This isn't my style, but looks great and is very well designed and crafted. Kudos to Mr. Thomassen. I'm sure his work will inspire others.
