How To: Childproof Your Home Theater

2008-4-1kidstv.jpgProtecting your home theater may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of childproofing, but Wired gives a great how to on how to keep your components from becoming your child's jungle gym.

Some advice they is to keep your flat screen high out of reach or housed within a cabinet to discourage swinging from the wall mount. The cabinet also gives you the ability to lock up media components away from curious fingers. Speakers too can easily become climbing challenges, and the article recommends a wall mount or a single enclosed sound projector. Finally, keep DVD clutter at bay with a media server, which allows you easy access to their favorite flicks. For more tips, check out the whole article here.

We did all those things with our system without having to read a childproofing article. It's pretty simple: child's reach is X height, therefore you move XYZ to a foot or more above that, preferably two, to allow for said child's growth and longer arms. Our wall-mount is a tilt kind that's flush against the wall; there's no arm or other protrusion to hang from. You also need a good cabinet lock if you're using cabinets. Glass cabinets may get broken or chipped, so that's something to think about.
