How to Clean Your Vinyl Records Using Wood Glue

031710gluevinyl.jpgCategorize this cleaning solution in the "huh, really?!" realm. Apparently quite a few avid vinyl collectors swear by the technique of using wood glue as a vinyl cleaner. The wood glue is applied and dried directly onto the vinyl while on a (backup) turntable and then peeled away to reveal a practically brand new looking platter of tunes.

We're not sure if we're ready to give our vinyl a cleaning with this technique, but the at the AudioKarma discussion board are adamant it's a tried and true technique, even going so far to provide audio before and after proof.

By the way, that first photo in the before is after the record was cleaned with an Audioquest brush. The wood glue used is composed of polyvinyl acrylate, similar to the material used to manufacture vinyl records. Check out the full how-to instructions over at audiokarma.org

It makes sense. I would assume the wood glue does not adhere to the vinyl at all so if you were careful peeling it off it would be like an exfoliating face mask for your records pulling off all the loose grit and grime holding on.

I'm unclear, so does this technique just clean the records or fill in/repair surface flaws as well? It'd be totally worth it if it accomplishes the latter.

Otherwise my better half has some frankenstein machine he rigged up (I think it involves a turntable and a vacuum cleaner...??) and it does an awesome job.

We made a very simple tutorial on the best method we have found for deep cleaning vinyl record. This process involves no scrubbing of any kind and using works with one application.
