How to: Stream Any Type of Video To Your Playstation 3

unplggd032408-stream01.jpgLooking for a way to watch any movie or TV show on your multimedia powerhouse, Playstation 3? Here’s a step by step, if not a bit convoluted, method of getting nearly all your standard and high definition movies on your computer to play on your big screen using your PS3 (fair warning: this isn't an easy install and click solution...not for the faint of heart)...

UPDATED instructions:

1. Uninstall any codec packs you have on your computer.

2. Download and install TVersity, but don't install their included codec pack.

3. Install ffdshow.

4. Install the Haali Media
Splitter
.

5. Go to ffdshow video decoder settings. Enable Subtitles.
Make sure the following are checked:

  • Accept embedded subtitles
  • Accept SSA, ASS, and ASS2 subtitles (experimental)
  • Decode closed captions

6. TVersity Tweaks

  • General > Media Sharing Device > Playstation 3.
  • Transcoder > Always Transcode
  • Use 1280x720 resolution, optimize for Quality, Wired, and Minimum compression.

7. Further Tweaks

  • Edit profiles.xml in install directory with Notepad.
  • Search "Playstation" and look a few lines below it.
  • Change the following from mpeg16 to mpeg2.
  • video="video/mpeg2" photo="image/jpeg"
  • onlineAudio="audio/mpeg" onlineVideo="video/mpeg2" onlinePhoto="image/jpeg"

8. Even More Tweaks

  • Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall Settings/Security Settings > Exceptions Tab > Add Program > Search your TVersity directory for Mediaserver.exe

9. Last Tweak, I Promise

  • Right click My Computer > Manage > Services & Applications > Services
  • Find "TVersityMediaServer" and double-click to open Properties.
  • Click on "Log On" tab and change the login from Local System account to an account for the computer.
  • Click "Find Now" to make things quick and easy.

10. Enjoy yourself some streamed media of your choice!

My friend showed me this link on his blog. It actually works terribly with any other codec. I actually fixed all the problems I was having after uninstalling my older codecs. Make sure you do that mpeg2 thing or it looks ugly!

This almost makes me want to purchase a PS3...just waiting for that next price drop and some better gaming choices (which seem very much in the pipeline).

I've tried this and am getting a problem with the regsvr32 matroskasplitter.ax command, its saying

"the module"matroskasplitter.ax" failed to load.
Make sure the binary is stored as the specified path or debug to check for problems with teh binary or dependant .dll files";

I'm running vista, and would love to get my ps3 to play all the files I have, just this issue is hindering me, any ideas as to what it could be, I've saved the file within the system32 directory etc.

hmm.. I believe this has only been verified on XP. You may have to download an updated version of the filter.

I tried this, but it didn't fully work...any idea's why?, I've done everything listed like for like..

I'm trying to stream a vob and mkv file (1.1gb) in size, the file no longer errors but it goes to a play screen, starts to play..but never does.

If I bring up the file info on the ps3, it does show the correct file type as mpeg2, and the correct length of the video file...I've tried decreasing the res down to 200x100 but it still won't play

Help meeee :(

Cheers

I suggest posting here: on the TVersity forums if you guys have further problems. Although the above steps worked perfectly for me, someone else may have a similar problem you can speak with there.

When running the cmd file, try to use run as administrator, the way i did it was using the search to find 'cmd' and then rightclick and select run as administrator. It works for me

Thank you!
Finally I got TVersity to stream my MKV's without crashing. Excellent guide. I'm running it on Vista without problems BTW.

To those of you using 64 bits Vista I advise you to use the updated Matroska Splitter (sf.net).

This will not give you an error message when trying to register it using regsvr32.

Hope that helps some of you at least :-)

Can someone please help me. I must admit I am but an end user....... I'm trying to get the most from my PS3. But when trying to follow the steps I seem to fall over at the first hurdle. When I try to remove the codecs I get a warning, should I just ignore these?

If you're a Mac user, Medialink works great and was made specifically for use with the PS3.

i'm a 360 user. not exactly on point but i'd suggest just converting all your movies to a compatible format. They end result is similar.

first find out the compatible formats for your ps3 or 360. look the web. certain audio only works in certain container formats and i don't think 5.1 surround works in most formats. personally i use xvid in an avi container or h264 in mp4 container. once you learn what a ps3 can play without issue, then get a process that works and soon it's easy. so if you think you did everything perfect and the file still doesn't play you may merely have your audio or video encoding at an imcompatable setting.

I personally converted all my dvds and stream them from my computer to my tv without tversity which i had issues. I now have 211 movies and several folders of videos, home movies, all of Entourage, La Femme Nikita, and the Wire.

I even steam near HD. I consider it hd cause i can barely tell the diff and it looks monumentally better then dvds. i've converted blu ray rips. I'm sure you can figure out where to get them if you apply yourself.

It may sound a bit daunting but once you figure it out and do it two or three times it's really easy.

for ripping dvds i use:
dvdfab 5 to rip the dvd to my hd.
handbrake to encode the iso to an h264 in mp4 container.

For HD conversions.
They are anywhere from 4 GBs to 8 GBs.
You need your end file under 4 GBs because xbox and PS3 have difficulty playing larger files
i use a program called Ripbot http://www.bontragerphotography.com/psp/RipBot264.php made for converting mkv to mp4 for use on a ps3. if you get confused look at this massive thread for new versions and for lots of help.http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=127611 the creator posts here often.
Note these conversions will take a long time on a good computer. think 8 hours so do these overnight or set it before you go to work. come home and it's done.

other tools i occasionally use

autogk a handbrake alternative, has hidden features for adding subs too. useful when i needed to add subs for asian language seens in Kill Bill.

GotSent - another mkv to mp4 converter
xvid4psp - mkv to mp4 converter. may do even more but i haven't used it fully. seems really powerful.

another note. Mkvs often have perfectly compatible h264 video inside and you can make it playable by putting it in an mp4 container by demuxing it and remuxing it. this can save you hours of reencoding time. there are plenty of software out there so down the road you should inform yourself about that process. it takes a few different software and sometimes requires downsampling audio from 5.1 to 2 channel audio to make it compatible. again it's a pain but once you do it three or four times it easy.

the end result of all of this is quite satisfying.

word to the wise back up every movie you rip or have so you never have to do it again.

MKV to VOB software does the same thing.

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_tools/mkv2vob.cfm

You can do this and you'll get 5.1 sound from MKV rips. The PS3 supports VOB. You can use Tversity to copy over the entire movie (can be over 4GB in this case), but make sure you have a wired connection because if it drops the copy, you're going to have to wait a few more hours for it to copy over.

You can stream media directly to your Playstation 3 without using transcoding software that hogs all your system resources. You simply set up Apache on the machine with all your files on it and use PS3's inbuilt web browser. See http://www.gredil.net/tech/ps3_media_streaming.html for more info. Only supports files that PS3 can handle but these days that's pretty much everything. Works like a dream.

I enjoy Streaming Full 1080P Blu-Ray rips to my PS3 with full DTS or DD 5.1 surround sound all w/o tversity. I use the windows media player to share my media files.

I simply use a program called AnyDvd to Rip the Blu-ray to my PC, full rips are around 30Gb, once the disc is ripped i simply rename the biggest M2TS file located in the stream directory to a mpg extension. The PS3 can usually stream this file from my Vista 64 PC w/o any problems at all and it plays back in Full 1080P over my 10/100mb LAN. Looks Flawless and as good as any blu-ray disc. Sometimes a movie will not play and i get a corrupted data error, not sure how to get bay that. But it is not the norm for that to happen.

Other times it will have the wrong audio track and u will have to use a program like tsremux to extract the video and audio files of your choice, and doing this usually lowers the files size a few GB, but its still massive.

But the good thing is its 1080P, no image loss at all. Playback is flawless, no lag what so ever unless the PC is being used. I thought about switching to tversity to play the few files that i have that will not play, but i do not know if its worth it as right now i am streaming 1080p w/o any problems. The only real down side is the movies are massive and i have already devoted 1 TB drive to this. I will have to add anther TB drive soon as the space requirements are massive.

Greetings all!!!
The 10 Step program with Tversity works best for me.
Most formats will play smoothly.HOWEVER!!!!
!080p movies stutter and are unwatchable,
Could be this RIP "the matrix Trilogy"

However they(1080p movies) play smoothly using MR.B method.(creating an Apache server and using the Ps3 built in web browser)
It did great on the 1080p movie, but gives me data corrupted on a stupid quicklime /mp4 encoded movie,
(Best of Wil Ferrelll) where as the 10 Step program w/Tversity will transcode it and play it.

I guess i have to live with switching back in forth between Tversity, and Apache Streaming.

There is not perfect solution, and no Converting to different formats are not a viable option.
Sadly i use this PS3 for movie watching more than gaming.

I use my xbox360 for playing games, as it pales to comparison vs the Ps3 when it comes to streaming movies.

If you're looking for simplicity, I suggest taking a look at PS3 Media server:

It has no hassles with modifying anything - simply install and run!
