How to: Stream Any Type of Video To Your Playstation 3

unplggd032408-stream01.jpgLooking for a way to watch any movie or TV show on your multimedia powerhouse, Playstation 3? Here’s a step by step, if not a bit convoluted, method of getting nearly all your standard and high definition movies on your computer to play on your big screen using your PS3 (fair warning: this isn't an easy install and click solution...not for the faint of heart)...

1. Uninstall any codec packs you have on your computer.

2. Download TVersity without their included codec pack.

3. Install FFDShow Tryout rev1726 0071224 from here.

4. Grab the 1.0.2.9 "Gabest" splitter here.
Install Gabest splitter by hand:

  • Use "Release Unicode" if you're running XP.

  • Extract MatroskaSplitter.ax to C:\windows\system32.

  • Start > Run > cmd

  • cd C:\windows\system32

  • regsvr32 matroskasplitter.ax (you can uninstall with: regsvr32 /u matroskasplitter.ax)

5. Go to ffdshow video decoder settings.

  • Enable Subtitles.

  • Make sure the following are checked:

  • Accept embedded subtitles

  • Accept SSA, ASS, and ASS2 subtitles (experimental)

  • Decode closed captions

6. TVersity Tweaks

  • General > Media Sharing Device > Playstation 3.

  • Transcoder > Always Transcode

  • Use 1280x720 res, optimize Quality, Wired, and Minimum compression.

7. Further Tweaks

  • Edit profiles.xml in install directory with Notepad.

  • Search "Playstation" and look a few lines below it.

  • Change the following from mpeg16 to mpeg2.

  • video="video/mpeg2" photo="image/jpeg"

  • onlineAudio="audio/mpeg" onlineVideo="video/mpeg2" onlinePhoto="image/jpeg"

  • adjustReadStartPos="false", audioFailFutureSeek="false", and videoFailFutureSeek="true" />

8. Even More Tweaks

  • Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall Settings/Security Settings > Exceptions Tab > Add Program > Search your TVersity directory for mediaserver.exe

9. Last Tweak, I Promise

  • Right click My Computer > Manage > Services & Applications > Services

  • Find "TVersityMediaServer" and double-click to open Properties.

  • Click on "Log On" tab and change the login from Local System account to an account for the computer.

  • Click "Find Now" to make things quick and easy.

10. Enjoy yourself some streamed media of your choice!

My friend showed me this link on his blog. It actually works terribly with any other codec. I actually fixed all the problems I was having after uninstalling my older codecs. Make sure you do that mpeg2 thing or it looks ugly!

This almost makes me want to purchase a PS3...just waiting for that next price drop and some better gaming choices (which seem very much in the pipeline).

I've tried this and am getting a problem with the regsvr32 matroskasplitter.ax command, its saying

"the module"matroskasplitter.ax" failed to load.
Make sure the binary is stored as the specified path or debug to check for problems with teh binary or dependant .dll files";

I'm running vista, and would love to get my ps3 to play all the files I have, just this issue is hindering me, any ideas as to what it could be, I've saved the file within the system32 directory etc.

hmm.. I believe this has only been verified on XP. You may have to download an updated version of the filter.

I tried this, but it didn't fully work...any idea's why?, I've done everything listed like for like..

I'm trying to stream a vob and mkv file (1.1gb) in size, the file no longer errors but it goes to a play screen, starts to play..but never does.

If I bring up the file info on the ps3, it does show the correct file type as mpeg2, and the correct length of the video file...I've tried decreasing the res down to 200x100 but it still won't play

Help meeee :(

Cheers

I suggest posting here: on the TVersity forums if you guys have further problems. Although the above steps worked perfectly for me, someone else may have a similar problem you can speak with there.

When running the cmd file, try to use run as administrator, the way i did it was using the search to find 'cmd' and then rightclick and select run as administrator. It works for me

Thank you!
Finally I got TVersity to stream my MKV's without crashing. Excellent guide. I'm running it on Vista without problems BTW.

To those of you using 64 bits Vista I advise you to use the updated Matroska Splitter (sf.net).

This will not give you an error message when trying to register it using regsvr32.

Hope that helps some of you at least :-)

Can someone please help me. I must admit I am but an end user....... I'm trying to get the most from my PS3. But when trying to follow the steps I seem to fall over at the first hurdle. When I try to remove the codecs I get a warning, should I just ignore these?

If you're a Mac user, Medialink works great and was made specifically for use with the PS3.
