Booken's Cybook Gen3 eBook Reader

2008-03-31-ebookrr.jpgJoining the Kindle and Sony's Digital Reader, Booken's Cybook Gen3 Reader features a slew of features that's one step closer to becoming the perfect eBook reader. A few downfalls, however, keep it from swimming to the top.

According to recent reviews, including one by TFOT not too long ago, the Cybook Gen3 is "very comfortable to read, even outdoors." This is most likely due to the Electronic Ink Display developed by the company themselves. A few other pros included well integration of RSS support and Mobipocket format used for most e-books.

The downsides, unfortunately, are big ones. The page flip mechanism was considered "cumbersome," and the lack of SDHC support and wireless connectivity is a big blow to what consumers want right now in an eBook reader. A few crashes with PDF support top it off. Hopefully, some company out there will touch this market and master it, but for now you'll have to sacrifice a little here and there in order to get your eBook fix.

The long battery life and the ability to read outside in direct sunlight are some of the highlights of these devices. I have the Sony and it fantastic to be able to sit by a plane window for 17 hours to Singapore and read straight through. Knowing that I won't have to recharge for another month is amazing.

It's called the Bookeen, not Booken.
