Karim Rashid Portable Hard Drive

2007_06_12 karim rashid hard drive.jpg

A top ten list of attractive external hard drives was blogged by Kelly before, but this one was not there. 60 gb, blue and designed by Karim Rashid. Not much more information available outside of that so if a striking case is what you are after then this one is for you.

Available here for $210.

Anyone have an opinion of Maxtor's OneTouch III? I think it's the top brand sold by Staples...

Thanks, boomer!
I keep forgetting about epinions. (Looks like the reviews are mixed, and both sites here seem to disagree completely.)

I think one of the most important things in an external drive is a fan. If the thing is going to be powered up for long times and get a lot of use, as in a media storage drive, a fan is a must as it will generate a lot of heat. Hard drives aren't rated for over 55 decrees c (131 degrees f).

In general hard drives are one of the most debated things I've seen.

My own experience with internal drives from Maxtor hasn't been great. I've had two die in less than a year of installation - one was getting light duty, another was used as a DVR drive in my HTPC system.

On the fkip side, I have other drives from maxtor that have been running fine.

As with anything mechanical, your mileage may vary.

By the way - that 131 degrees is "case temperature", not ambient.
