Inspiring Celestial Suspension Lights By Bastien Carre

There's just something magical about having suspended ceiling lights arranged like constellations. We just love how these lights look. Hopefully, by looking at these, you'll find some new ways of arranging your own lights.

110509_rg_bastiencarre_02.jpgThese lights are by Bastien Carré and are part of his Céleste collection. Carré uses LED lights as his main material to make these starry lights. They are perfect for this type of lighting. They have a great lifetime, need little electricity and enabled him to make his lights extremely light. Most of his pieces are limited production as they take a lot of hours to complete.

110509_rg_bastiencarre_03.jpgCarré was also able to make the electrical wiring almost invisible, completing the illusion of these celestial lights. His lights are entirely handmade and usually need to be soldered one LED at a time, often times there are hundreds of LEDs in one piece. These lights are part of an exhibit at the Nimagine gallery in Nîmes, France.

110509_rg_bastiencarre_05.jpgWe think that these lights are great and that it should be not that hard to make something similar on your own. By this, we mean that you could simple rearrange some LED lighting, or suspended lighting, to give a similar effect that these handmade pieces of art.

Can you recommend a source for LED lights? We're thinking about attempting to recreate something like these over our bed - an instant NYC apartment planetarium feel.

I know that there are a few LED available through the Make blog. You might want to check that out. Otherwise, at more specialized hardware shops, you'll find LEDs in bulk. It all depends on exactly what type of LEDs you want. Still, it's a great idea though! Maybe you could hack an IKEA suspended light to act as a rig to conduct electricity to your LEDs.
