Got an iPhone? Then You Have a Remote Light Switch

111308remotelite.jpgWhat isn't the iPhone doing? It's a square and a level. It's also a bedside clock that happens to be able to control your entire home automation system. Not to be left out, Lutron is hopping on the iPhone train.

The 'system' consists of either your iPhone or iPod touch and Lutron wireless modules attached to the specific lights that you want to control. Looking at the UI for this Lutron application, it is very similar to the Lutron Aurora lighting automation set we reviewed before. But instead of a dedicated keypad stuck in one room, you have the flexibility of keeping the control in your pocket and always accessible. If this works as well as the Aurora system, Lutron definitely has a winner here.

so instead of flipping a light switch you have to pull out your iphone, load the app, and flip the switch? not to mention buy those ugly boxes for every light you want to control?

seems like a pretty complicated way to turn on a lamp!

There's an iPhone app that's out right now, and it controls X10 devices. I tried it out on my home setup, and it worked great:

i wonder if this can be connected to the internet, so that you can flip your switches from a remote location. Being able to turn on and off your lights from a vacation spot, or when you forget before you leave the house would be pretty cool imo.
