Griffin AirCurve Review: More Sound From Your Iphone

032009_rg_aircurvereview_01.jpgSo, you're stuck camping and would like to share some music. Or you're sitting in your bath, and would like to hear some music. What are you going to do? Plugged docks aren't always the answer because sometimes, you need something that is completely unplugged. At Unplggd, we tend to like devices like that. The Griffin AirCurve is just that. It's a kind of dock that amplifies the sound from your iPhone, but does it actually work?

091808_tf_aircurve_01.jpgWe initially blogged about the upcoming release of the Griffin AirCurve. But what exactly is it? It's a dock that amplifies the sound produced by an iPhone without any extra power. Meaning that you just stick your iPhone in there pretty much anywhere and hope to get more sound out of it thanks to the technology integrated into the polycarbonate base. So it amplifies the iPhone's speaker by about 10 decibels.

First of all, the AirCurve looks cool. It's made out of a clear plastic, making it almost invisible from afar. It's also pretty small, so it's easy to lug around when you are on the go. It's basically a speaker that doesn't require any extra outside power. This means that it can be used anywhere. It's a known fact that the battery life of the iPhone isn't that great, how will an un-powered speaker function off that same battery? The response out of the iPhone combined with the AirCure is impressive, though lacking in bass, which is something that usual plugged speakers could easily provide. It sort of emits a low-tech echo, that isn't unpleasant. The AirCurve is a small, smart, and portable device that you can use to listen music anywhere. If you are looking for better sound quality and bass, then you shouldn't go for this. However, since the AirCurve retails for about $20, it shouldn't break the bank. It can be easily use in the backyard, the kitchen, the bathroom, or anywhere else where you don't want to deal with a plugged-in sound system. [via CrunchGear]

I love my AirCurve. Instead of having having multiple ipod docks around the house, I just move the aircurve from room to room. The sound is a bit flat, but for $20 it's great.

I love my AirCurve as well. I've got it in the bathroom & use it when I'm in the shower. The flatness is overcome by the water, so it sounds fine. A great $20 purchase - looks cool and works exactly as described.

I love my AirCurve! I use it when I'm taking a bath, because nothing kills a relaxing mood like that BZZZZZTZZZTZT noise phones sometimes make when they're plugged into speakers.

When I'm not in the bath, I keep it on my desk. I've just re-trained myself to include "put iPhone on AirCurve" in my coming-home routine. Now I can hear it ring from anywhere in my apartment, so I don't miss calls the way I always used to do when I just left the phone in my jacket, on the coffee table, wherever I set it down and forgot about it.

About all I use mine for is the bathroom because the amplification is not that much greater than the iPhone alone. Still kinda sounds like a tin box amplifier though. I was pretty disappointed but eh...20 bucks.
