If you don't yet have some version of the entry efficiency device known to the Apartment Therapy-devoted as a landing strip, then you need to get to work. Whether yours is a large foyer with full-sized furniture or a small shelf next to the door to a studio, it might benefit from some tech. A clock or weather indicator will do for now, but in the future we might see landing strips like this concept...

The I-Quad concept is made up of several LED-lit 'tiles' on a frame which can, with help from your USB- or Bluetooth-connected gadgets (which conveniently get their own little shelf), can display time, weather, news, e-mails and images. Adding to the cool factor is a low-res, almost dot matrix-like display.
A gizmo like this could forever change the landing strip. Checking the time and weather right before you head out the door would be effortless. And leaving put-it-where-they'll-see-it messages to housemates would be as easy as sending an e-mail—it could even happen long-distance!
What do you think, Unplggd? Would a concept like this have weight in the real world?

i don't know a single blackberry, iPhone, or other smartphone owner whose device isn't with them at all times. why would you want to buy what would likely be an expensive panel to display all the information that you already have right there on your phone? not to mention the impracticality of having to hop over to your giant landing strip gizmo to retrieve your phone in order to answer a call.
in addition, the aesthetics of this concept leave something to be desired. if this were somehow made practical, i'd like to see a much, much smaller display that gives me the same information. everything this seems to show could fit on a 3" screen - why would you want something this huge filling up your wall?

A 'whether indicator'? Oh, I get it. It's a device a meteorologist uses to look at a girl and tell whether...

Gotta admit I think it's pretty cool looking, assuming that it is also an Ipod Dock and I can play music with it. I like the combination of art gadget.

Aesthetics are highly subjective. Why would you want to have the info you have in your pocket on the wall? Because you are fond of it that way (for the same reason many people buy Ambient Devices cubes to sit and their room and glow a color to represent weather or stock trends instead of looking at their phone or computer). Having some commonplace and daily information pushed to you on your way in and out of the door, in a very relaxed and ambient way is in many ways more relaxing than having to proactively think 'I better check my iPhone for the weather - digging it out of my pocket - sliding the bar thing - opening the weather widget - waiting for sync...'. It becomes a lot more like glancing at a window.
The size and scope and lofi aesthetics give the piece a perspective. Not everybody will appreciate it. I do -- if the lofi edge also made it pretty affordable, I'd like something like this (especially if it was very modular).
