Customizer: Tribute to the IBM Model M

2008_05_13-unicomp.jpgWhen Apple recently announced their super slim aluminum keyboard there was a lot of love for the new design. On the flip side, there were also some who thought the low profile keys would be difficult to use and yearned for a more retro style keyboard with 'you are damn sure you hit the key because you can hear it across the room' type feedback.

For this, the IBM model M is what kept coming up as the reference keyboard design. It has been modded into a steampunk typewriter keyboard and now Unicomp has the Customizer 104/105 keyboard. Inspired by the Model M, you can pick this up here for $69.

I loved that keyboard. The sound that came from it made me feel like I was working. I also had an admin back then who could type at 168 WPM and could exceed the keyboard buffer on that thing.

Oh I love the old IBM keyboard and love it's resistance feel too, never mind that it was clacky but hey, it's letting me know it's being used so why all the hoopla over quiet keys that make virtually NO sound when they are also of poor feel?

I just wished it was modified enough to allow for the power buttons so I can put my PC into sleep or power it down at the very least.

I have a Thinkpad T42p for work, and I love it. I think
it's the same as the T42, except it has a better graphics chipset,
and the 1600x1200 screen. It's nice and fast yet still very lightweight.
