Waterproof Your iPhone for the Kitchen

011110_tf_vacuumsealiphone.JPGOk, so it's a temporary fix. But that doesn't make it any less brilliant for our at-home chefs who want to stay connected while they cook.

Over at the insanely clever kitchen blog Behind the Knife, a chef in Charleston, SC shows the world how he protects his iPhone from kitchen spills by giving it the vacuum-sealed treatment.

Chef Chip Sheen of Charleston Grill sends his iPhone through a sous vide machine (aka a CryoVac) at the start of each shift for a tightly sealed plastic force field that guards against accidental sprays, steams and spills.

The best part about it is that the phone is still completely functional to read and send emails, text, use apps and make calls; although the plastic does muffle voices a bit. But we're sure sticky-handed cooks everywhere might give this one a try with their Foodsavers.

If you've got the equipment at home, it's a way more secure option than a baggie.

Love it. One of my favorite things about my iphone is being able to have all of my recipes right there, but I hate putting it in harm's way (even if the worst that usually happens is its screen getting a dusting of flour).

If he got one of those inductive charging cases he might never have to take it out of the baggie again.
