Sometimes a piece of wood/paper or a book isn't enough to cool down a laptop when you're working for more than a few hours; laptops like the MacBook can get awfully hot after more than a couple of hours, and it's not just your thighs that are in danger of getting burned...the components within could are endangered with failure as heat is a computer's #1 enemy. Or Windows Vista...I jest, I jest [ducking] (Go Windows 7!). For those looking for something a bit more serious in regards to laptop cooling on the go, the Belkin Laptop Cooling Stand is a more than viable options thanks to a couple features...
The Belkin Laptop Cooling Stand is designed to push airflow upward onto the laptop surface, following the natural direction of rising heat; a "wave" design provides space inbetween the cooling pad and laptop surface where a single USB powered fan pushes cool air up onto the laptop, and then channeled out the sides. Wonder if this airflow is noticeable for the user, something pleasant in winter and not so welcome in hot summer months. Available in white or black for about

This is the laptop stand/cooler that I purchased after much research and debate.
It's a bit cheap feeling, and the USB power port on the back is apparently really easy to break (and I believe it), but it does the job REALLY WELL while staying quiet. Depending on what I'm doing I'll sometimes leave it unplugged (like for just web browsing) and it keeps the laptop well cooler than it would be on my lap, but when I fire up a game I'll always plug it in. I used to get artifacting and glitchiness from the CPU throttling itself when it got toasty, but the fan on this makes all the difference. On my dell latitude I've also found that popping off the cover to the RAM module cools it down significantly more effectively, but that's sort of an advanced technique. ;-)
Not a shill, just a happy owner of this particular laptop cooler.

I agree about it being cheaply made. While it worked, it did the job just fine. But mine got a short in it only a couple of months after purchase. I also found the curve of it slightly uncomfortable for my lap. For about the same price I bought the Antec cooler, which has an aluminum top and two fans, and it has served me much better.

I'm a nightclub DJ and use my laptop for DJing. I'm now on my 2nd Belkin cooling stand. It's decent for it's price. My first one "died" because the pin that the USB cord plugs into came loose and slid inside the unit. It feels pretty cheap but, it really isn't bad for the price. They're rugged enough to get unpacked, used, and packed 3 times a weekend for months on end. They do keep my HP cool and that can be a challenge in a DJ booth with all the other equipment heating it up.
Overall, I say it's worth the money.

My boyfriend and I have two of these. They keep our older Gateway "desktop replacement" laptop from frying when we have friends over to play games, and keep another laptop running smoothly for both games and normal work.
We used to have two Gateways; the first actually sparked and literally burned part of the motherboard and video card. So this thing is definitely doing its job keeping our remaining Gateway in functional condition. :)
