Greening Wal-Mart: House Brand CFLs

2007-09-25cfl.jpgEven the former president of the Sierra Club, Adam Werbach, is buying into Wal-mart's goals of becoming a serious player in the green market. And this news is right in line with other moves to green their wares: in an attempt to sell 100 million Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs by the end of the year, they're introducing their own house-branded CFL.

In traditional Wal-mart fashion, the bulbs will be sold alongside other brand-name CFLs but will be at a lower price by the end of September in 3,000 of its US Stores.

I want so very much to like these bulbs, but the aesthetics and limited dimming capabilities just keep holding me back (I do use them in the closets.).

I recently saw a crystal chandelier with CFLs and wanted to scream. They basically rendered the purpose of it being a crystal lamp useless. Crystal doesn't shimmer under horrendous glow of CFLs. They are UGLY and and unflattering, I just can't get past that.

I guess I will have to wait until LEDs are improved in a few years.
