Phillips LED Lightbulbs Look Like the Old Guard

030909_tf_masterLED_2.jpgCompact flourescent lamps, or CFLs as we've come to call them, have been gaining ground on the old standby incandescent bulbs for a while now. Something about using less energy and saving money on electric bills, so we've heard (embrace the sarcasm, people). But in our humble opinion, and do realize this opinion comes from a girl who has already switched every available bulb in the house to Ikea brand CFLs, they're kinda ugly. In light fixtures and lamps where you can see the bulb, that bright and wirey little spiral looks a little too sterile and hospital chic than when there was a little warm round circle peeking out. Phillips is fixing that with a bulb-shaped LED lamp...

030909_tf_masterLED_1.jpgThe Master LED from Phillips is already available in Europe, but should be making its way to the US, following in the footsteps of the Beatles and fish & chips, this summer.

The bulb uses just 7 watts to power, but gives off a brighter light equivalent to 40 watts' worth. Plus, it gets around 10 times the life that CFLs give you, and 45 times the life of incandescents, to the tune of around 45,000 hours.

All of that, and it gives off no heat and no ultra violet or infrared light. More info on the specifications is available here if you need it. But we're already sold!

looks neat. I don't think it'll let off that much light. I don't believe it would even be equivalent to 40w incandescent lumens. I love leds - have quite a few high power led flashlights. The high power get very, very hot. That's probably heat sinking around the bulb there.

"...and it gives off no heat..."

Uh, maybe, but then what's with the massive heatsink that takes up the bottom half of the bulb?
