Sleek Candela Luau Lantern is Really Handy, Too

080408_tf_luaulight01.jpgFloodlights, flashlights and other gadgets that can come in handy in emergency situations always tend to be less than attractive. Needless to say we never have them handy when we need them.

But gone are the days of fumbling through pitch-black junk drawers. The portable Candela Luau lamp is a lighting solution for your home that wears many hats. The coolest one being that of a lifesaver, as it automatically lights up when your power goes out.

080408_tf_luaulight02.jpgThe Candela Luau, available at OXO, is an LED lantern that is suitable for many different settings. Sitting on a desktop, it is chic and functional with a minimalist teardrop shape and a built-in dimmer. LED lights mean you’ll never worry about changing a lightbulb.

The bulb itself sits atop a charging base. as soon as you lift up on the handle, the lantern lights up and becomes portable. When electricity to the lamp is cut—like in a power outage—the lantern automatically turns on. No worry. No fuss. It is cool to the touch and stays lit for up to 10 hours, making it perfect for impromptu patio parties.

We could see using the cordless Luau lamp as the perfect centerpiece of an outdoor dinner-party table.

Are there any cheaper versions of a LED latern like this? I would love to get one for my parents but $200 is a little pricey for me.

wow - yeah that's way too much for this thing... I have two of the rock river 4AA lanterns from Target - for around 23 bux it's a great lantern. Very compact and very bright - I take it to the bathroom when I get up in the middle of the night all the time! I have modded one with a brighter led but stock is plenty bright really. You can also find some knockoff ones at dealextreme.com. You might could stick one in some sort of wire/paper lantern and have something that looked similar to this one by oxo.
