We somehow missed these fabulous Swarovski light socks when they premiered at Design Miami 07, but just had to share now that they are available for purchase. Essentially a mesh bag filled with crystals and a single light source, this light sock is being marketed as "the people's chandelier"...

Designed by the architecture and design firm of Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the Light Sock contains 46 lbs of crystal and a 75W halogen bulb, and is available from Unica Home for $4,400.
Given the price, we're not really sure we agree that this is a chandelier aimed at the masses, but do wonder about the DIY possibilities for a talented amateur.
Maybe a small one as an accent light, but I just can't see it serving as a primary light source for, say, a dining room table.

I'm sorry, I didn't want to go there, but it really looks like a room full of scrotum.
And seriously, what idiot would buy these? All because those chunks are "Swarovski" they're magically better? You can do the same thing yourself with glass baubles (because, at the end of the day, Swarovski is just glass, too).
Reminds me of this famous line ... "You don't know when to quit, do ya Griswold?... Here's an idea: Why don't you give me half the money your were gonna to bet, then we'll go out back, I'll kick you in the nuts, and we'll call it a day!"

I expect better products/ideas from Diller Scofidio Renfro, rather than this poorly executed rip-off of Ernesto Neto.

mmm i really like the concept behind this. i would be worried about the "sock" *cough* scotrum *cough* tearing open or something and having hundreds of really hot crystals dropping on my head....or worse... i think a bag full of cubics would work just as well.. or even those clear glass beads from ikea ... wrapped in a stainless steel mesh.. now THAT would be great... and maybe use a few smaler high output leds rather than the 75watt bulb in this one!

There are at least two ways to make something super similar for under 20$ that I can think of off the top of my head. First make yourself a tube out of some sort of stretchy fabric and sew it up at one end. Then fill with either LED christmas lights and glass pebbles, or a pendent light cord (about 5$ at Ikea) with a CFL (low heat output) surrounded with the glass pebbles. Over 4,000$? Give me a break. I second (eighth?) the idea that it doesn't look that good anyway. I thought that people were into traditional style chandeliers right now. Why take out the beautiful form from the middle, bundle up all the sparkly bits in a sack and call it something good?

While obviously no one here can afford it, $4000 for 46 POUNDS of pure crystal sounds pretty reasonable. However you could easier create something just as beautiful for much much less.
