apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

The Monumental Untitled Concepts Collection Floor Lamp

Some of you design-centric readers may know Marc Newson 1987 design, 'Super Guppy' Floor Lamp. Apparently Newson's design was the inspiration for this street light derived floor lamp, despite the vast different in scale. It's that scale that gives this design a disconcerting proportional presence...like a floor lamp seen through the eyes of David Lynch (The Merrick Lamp?)...

But if the beluga whale headed lamp floats your boat and you want to bring the streets aesthetic into your home, the light is available for $2400 at Modern50 or Factory20. There's no arguing the light is certainly dramatic and a conversation piece.

omg, he stole my idea!
last weekend i went to the habitat for humanity restore and found myself a street lamp head. i snaged it right up for $35 bucks (along with 4 enormous letters for only $5 each). i gutted it and still need to add a regular light socket and add wire for hanging, and i'll have myself a unique dining room lamp!
i also wanted to pick up a set of apartment mailboxes for some fun storage, but at $100, it was a bit out of my budget. i'd highly recommend the store though, i was like a kid in a candy store.
