These days there are hardly any products you can say that are truly built to last a lifetime, but this might indeed be the case with the Light For Life UC3.400 flashlight from 5.11 Tactical. The Light for Life uses ultracapacitors instead of batteries to charge up in a blink of an eye 90 seconds and can be recharged over and over 50,000 times! The heavy duty flashlight is aimed at those in professions such as the police and military, offered at $170 and available sometime early next year. All things considered, the flashlight seems like a steal. More info below about how it works and order info...
The Light for Life™ contains no batteries, but rather a proprietary energy management system that utilizes revolutionary ultracapacitors and computer circuitry. Ultracapacitors have the ability to quickly load energy, and then quickly unload it – producing the flash in most cameras. Up until this point, no one has been able to control both the way the ultracapacitors load, store and unload the energy. The ultracapacitors also have the ability to release energy at precise levels while maximizing performance and run time. The proprietary circuitry, together with the ultracapacitors, is what makes Flashpoint™ Power Technology.

So, um, Why is a claimed 1.5 hours of light a good thing? Regular batteries with leds at this price point will get you 100 hours easily at very similar light output. And what's this "peak" thing. I want to know the average over an hour. Any old flash bulb will have a high peak. And so what if when you get back to the station with the other kind you have to put it in the charger - at least you only have to charge it once a week. This one, you might have to charge twice a night. hmnn? a bit of lame.
