We Love... Lamp: George Nelson Criss Cross Lamps Get Reissued

061109_nelson_bubble.jpgOne of our favorite lamps of all time get a well-deserved re-release over at Modernica this week. The George Nelson Criss Cross lamps in flavors of Pear, Cigar, and Ball all make an appearance (Yeah, we realize the picture above is of the regular Bubble Lamp, which have been selling for quite some time). However, this particular style stopped being produced back in 1979, so we've been scouring eBay for quite some time for a good lookin' unit. Now, we can finally get 'em straight from the source. Woot!

(Updated, thanks for the clarification, mod-century!)

061109_crisscross-nelson-lamp2.jpgMy favorite happens to be the Saucer Criss Cross Bubble Lamp. Just my luck that it also happens to be one of the most expensive ones in the re-release. Still, beats the $400-$500 price tags people were looking for them used on eBay just a few months ago.

You can take a look at (or better yet, buy) one from their collection of Bubble Lamps over here. Prices start at about $359 for the Criss Cross models. A bit high for a mere lamp, but hey, free shipping!

What planet are you from? Bubble Lamps have been available from Modernica for the past 10 years. They recently re-issued the Criss-Cross series in Pear, Cigar, and Ball which have been absent since the 1960s. When Howard Miller produced them, ALL designs were available in either regular or CC. Still, pretty cool you can get the CC again, but they are expensive!...now if only they'd reissue the Diamond.

Actually, the Criss Cross Bubble Lamp has only been available as a saucer since Modernica became the official worldwide distributor and manufacturer of the George Nelson Bubble Lamp Collection in the 90’s.
So the Pear, Cigar and Ball Criss Cross lamps truly are reissues.
Originally, customers could write “CC” on their lamp orders and get almost any lamp made as a Criss Cross. This wasn't done very much, so as a result the old Criss Cross lamps are quite rare.
George Nelson developed the Bubble Lamp in 1947 after purchasing a high-end Swedish spherical hanging lamp for his new office. Nelson was inspired to design a lighting fixture with the same look and superior lighting, but more cost effective. Howard Miller produced the Bubble Lamps from 1952 until they discontinued production in 1979.
In the 1990's, Modernica reissued the Bubble Lamp line utilizing Nelson’s exact specifications and the original Howard Miller factory tooling. Modernica also “named” each individual Bubble Lamp design: Saucer, Ball, Cigar, Apple, Pear, Criss Cross, Lantern and Propeller. The original lamps were not given names by Nelson instead they were assigned catalog numbers.

And that's the scoop!
