apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

A Home Theater in a 300 Square Foot Apartment

Most people would resign themselves to watching movies on their computer or head off to that old fashioned cinema theater if they lived in a 300 sq. ft. student studio. But home theater enthusiast and student MR-ETM wasn't going to let square footage get in the way of creating his perfect, albeit compact, home theater setup complete with theater armchairs...

Bravo, what a great setup in such a compact space (and one we think one of those Yamaha single speaker theater solutions may work exceptionally within considering the room's shape). We like how he's hidden most of the wiring/cables behind what looks like IKEA shelving, alongside using a white cable housing which offers a much more clean appearance to the setup. One additional detail would would recommend is adding blockout shades to reduce glare from the left side of the room. But we do like how he's displayed scalp massager as an abstract piece of art on one of the shelves.

Details of MR-ETM's setup include:

  • Altec Lansing ADA885XMG Speakers
  • Apple iPod Nano
  • Apple MacBook
  • Koss Porta Pro Headphones
  • Marantz CD5003 Desktop CD player
  • Marantz SR5003
  • Microsoft Xbox 360
  • Samsung PS42A457 Plasma TV
  • Sennheiser HD212 Pro Headphones

I used to live in a similar situation. My "living room" was only around 120 sq feet. I used these futon mattresses originally designed to fill a huge beanbag chair as flexible, roaming seating. They could be put on the stand and used as a couch base, spread out as floor seating/lounging or folded up into chairs. Managed to cram a smallish TV and a projector into the space using wall and ceiling mounts along with a lot of custom furniture which was silly but fun. Never failed to surprise the few people you could cram in there to see a movie.

It is a challenge but a fun one. Making functional small spaces is a great lesson in ingenuity and reservation.

More important anything else is ... how does it sound? It can't be called "home theatre" is it sounds like a transistor radio.

How sad when half of your living space is devoted to tv. But I guess if you are going to be a couch potato, this is the way to do it.
