Microsoft is playing nice guy with this free 1000 song download offer. What's the catch? You'll see (but not hear) advertisements on your screen in addition to the album's cover art, which is how Microsoft is able to offer the back catalog of older and independent artist songs. The selection isn't half bad, with some underground bangers from the recognizable likes of Immortal Technique, DJ Vadim, Damu The Fudgemunk and alternative tunes from acts like Orange, Los Lonely Boys , and The Lemonheads; the majority of the bands offered are independent acts we haven't heard of, but at the price of "free", you might find a new act to love and follow...

You have to download them one by one. Considering that these are all unknown artists or throwaway tracks from B-level artists, the effort or clicking a "download" button 1000x is probably not worthwhile.
I'll stick to getting my "free" tracks from Torrents...
