Possibly our favourite annual home appliance and electronics competition, the Electrolux Design Lab 2009 came to conclusion in London last night, with a winner announced: Rickard Hederstierna's Cocoon, the meat and fish maker that uses RFID signals to identify what is being cooked and adjusting cooking time accordingly...
Rickard Hederstierna was awarded a prize of € 5000 and a six-month paid internship at one of Electrolux global design centers for his energy efficient and smart cooker:
“Cocoon” is a sustainable response to the world’s growing population and its desire to consume meat and fish. Similar to heating popcorn in a microwave, Cocoon prepares genetically engineered and prepackaged meat and fish dishes by heating muscle cells identified by radio frequency identification (RFID) signals. The signals detect the specific dish and then suggest the required cooking time. This process uses science to create food, lifting a burden on the planet by reducing the need for further intensive farming and fishing. The negative effects of this process, including the mass transportation of food around the world, clearing of land and distortion of ecosystems, are then negated.
ok the video quite literally says it "grows" meat and fish! how does it grow meat and fish??
Im guessing by the simulation you put something in, like a premade packet, and something comes out of that, but how it makes "meat" is beyond me...
really interesting

Why is it called a meat and fish 'maker'? It sounds like the magic porridge pot.
