Look! A Supercomputer That Fits Under Your Desk

092308_craycx1.jpgIt's amazing to see how fast technology evolves. Supercomputers have always been gigantic. Cray has come up with a supercomputer that will fit underneath your desk. It's called the CX1. Soon, we will see houses and homes run by supercomputers, being able to do what PCs aren't yet able to do. With one centralized supercomputer, you will just need terminals all over your house, not a whole bunch of different computers.

Cray and Microsoft announced a partnership to produce the CX1, a supercomputer that will run on Windows HPC Server 2008. The CX1 packs 16 Intel Xeon processors, either dual or quad-core, with 8 supercomputing nodes that can accommodate 64GB of memory per node. Internal storage tops out at 4TB. Prices range from $4,000 to $85,000.

Why would I need to spend so much to buy a CX1?

I can get a Dell server for less than $300 (check out the Dell SC440). Spend a little more to increase memory to 4Gb, add 2 Tb of disk (or better yet get a NAS in RAID 5 configuration).

From there I can either run Windows server on it or one of the many flavors of Linux. I can then remote log in to the server using my old desktops/laptops or thin clients.

pkway- dell's logo is not as cool as this cxi brand so the rest of what you said, correct as it may be, is pretty much unimportant.
