Look! Atari Desk from 1983

2008-4-4ataridesk.jpgBoing Boing recently shared a photo of a desk circa 1983. The Atari computer will bring back fond memories for some, but one thing we don't miss is the need for all those components.

Look at all the gear they had to contend with, although it's really organized quite nicely. You can check out the photo and the nostalgic conversation it's started over at Boing Boing.

Component wise, I don't think that's any worse than modern systems. You had a monitor, a cassette deck, two disc drives, an interface box and a printer. The Ataris were nice in that they used a sort of precursor to USB - just plug the device in and it would work, no drivers. Devices were just daisy chained.

A modern desktop PC will typically have a keyboard and mouse plugged in, a monitor, a printer, a USB hub, frequently one or more external drives, speakers, plus maybe a scanner, a cable or DSL modem, a router (wireless or otherwise), a docking station for an iPod . . . If anything, they're even worse.

I like the genuine Star Wars drinkware. Nice touch.
