Phil works with BackGarage blogger Katherine Raz at her day job as the marketing director for a Chicago theater company. When he discovered her side project he began obsessively keeping track of Katherine's Craigslist Roundups. He ended up furnishing a large portion of his new apartment with furniture he scored through her roundups.
Katherine recently posted photos from Phil's cush pad and we stepped back when we saw his TV set-up. His flat screen is set on a shelf within a floor to ceiling bookcase attached to the wall. When Katherine asked if he’s afraid they’ll come crashing down in the middle of the night, he interrupted her with, “Constant fear.”
While we would be pretty freaked out to, we do love how it all just fits together. The TV becomes less of the focal point, and more of a beautiful work of art displayed on a shelf amongst all unique curiosities.

I couldn't live like that. I would be afraid all the time!

I don't understand all the fear of the shelves falling down... If you use the proper anchors for your screws those types of shelves can hold 100's of pounds in books.

where are all the cords and the outlets to provide the electricity needed? And how did she hide them? I see an xbox and cable box and speakers, but no cords-- except for a couple coming out of the TV.

You can replace a flat screen. How about that turntable?

Agreed that if you use proper anchors and the proper brackets, you should not have any problems and most LCD TV's up to I think 40" are not terribly heavy to begin with so what's the worry?

i'm not actually that scared that it will fall. i had it professionally installed, and the installer told me he was worried about the stability of my wall, but it's been six months and it seems fine.
the cords are taped to the vertical struts that hold the shelf up. the outlet is under the bottom shelf and a power strip goes up behind the TV so all of the cords are basically behind the TV or taped to the bottom of the the shelves. the Xbox was a special problem. the power supply is hidden behind the comic books on the shelf over the TV and the controlers are wire less. hiding the cables was the real challenge of this project. and i think i pulled it off pretty well. you can see a few in the picture, but that's just time plus tape. i need to redo a few of them.
the stereo i got on ebay ($45) to match the old pioneer speakers my parents used to use as night stands when i was a kid. it sounds awesome.
thanks for noticing AT!
