Do movie studios finally get it? 20th Century Fox, The Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Lionsgate, Image Entertainment and First Look Studios will all be offering new releases via iTunes at $14.99 on the same day as DVD releases (with most catalog titles at $9.99). Disappointingly, we'll all still have to wait about 30 days for movie rentals of new releases from iTunes. Boo~
Purchase New Movies on iTunes Same Day as DVD Release
But as an Apple TV owner, what I really want is more, More, MORE movies to choose from. The selection currently is too weak and limited, so we're hoping this is a sign to come that studios are finally waking up to the reality of the new business model for media distribution (but we're not holding our breath). $15 is a bit steep considering the lack of extras and packaging, but the convenience and immediacy (sort of) makes up for price.
Apple said the new releases available this week for purchase over iTunes to coincide with their DVD release include "American Gangster" and "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly." Other new titles Apple has added to the store include "Juno," "Cloverfield," "I Am Legend," and "There Will Be Blood."
The ball is in your court, Netflix, and the lane to the hoop is wide open if you bring us same day releases AND rentals with your beloved selection of movies beyond Alvin & The Chipmunks and other throwaway flicks offered by iTunes.

So last night we decided we should watch "Cloverfield" and I found out the hard way that it was only available if I bought it. I was pretty peeved to find out though that it wasn't avilable in HD. Then it dawned on me maybe they were doing me a favor....considering it was shot on a shaky-cam. That aside...I've been unable to find any of the movies avilable for purchase avilable in HD. Has anyone found any? I can rent them in HD...but not buy them in HD.

I haven't seen HD movies for sale yet. Even with the standard definition DVD's, how hard would it be to send a physical media after I purchase it, or allow a one-time burn to a backup DVD.
Cloverfield costs $14.99 to buy on iTunes. It's only $1.00 more on Amazon, and I get the pleasure of actually owning a hard-copy of the product. Why would I choose the iTunes route?
