Green Wars: SSD Drives Are More Energy Efficient

ssd_vs_spinners.jpgIt looks like Laptop Magazine just countered Tom's Assessment not too long ago about solid state drives having lower battery life than standard hard drives with a new report stating that they are indeed more efficient - about 10 minutes more. The comparisons after the jump...

ssd_vs_spinners2.png"As you can see, both SSDs lasted 3:23, exactly 10 minutes longer than the default hard drive. While 10 minutes out three hours is not a significant gain, it’s certainly not a loss. In other words, the SSDs we tested don’t use more battery life than traditional hard drives, at least not during Web surfing."

The more we think about this whole ordeal, we begin to wonder if it's even worth arguing about since the prices of SSD's are so high right now. However, since SSD's truly have no moving parts, we definitely believe they are the wave of the future as storage space becomes larger and prices decrease into the consumer range. All of this power fluff, well, is extra entertainment for people looking to avoid early adoption at all costs.

How many times can you do a read/write to an SSD when compared to a magnetic disk drive? Hard drives can last decades. Is it the same for an SSD?

A harddrive that lasts decades? HAH. I'd be shocked if one lasted that long in a desktop and there's no way it would in a laptop. It's not the read/write that'll crap out, but it'll crap out nonetheless.

I kinda think the efficiency argument is somewhat beside the point. SSD work great for laptops because banging them around doesn't hurt them. The extra efficiency would be an added bonus, but even a slight ding in battery life wouldn't make me choose HD if SSD was a similar price. Of course, with 64GB costing a small fortune, most of us won't have any reason to care for a few years yet.

Yeah, though being functional after a drop is more efficient in my book. But what about in super modium testing, huh? I wanna know how ssd's perform there because that is the most realest test of all. Personal Environmental National Internal Systems ran a test on these a few weeks back that showed that discs last ten minutes longer under those conditions.

Maybe Unplggd should get a few no? Since they test products for more than couple of weeks? Someone in IT send them some, with laptops for good measure!

OK- I totally made up the super modium test. Also, that organization I mentioned... check the acronym for it. Lies. Sorry.
