News: DVD Sales are in Decline

2007-12-4-dvdimage.jpgAccording to Ars Technica, DVD sales are down. While this decrease may not be good for studios, its great news for cluttered homes everywhere. Have you stopped buying DVDs as often? What makes a DVD worth buying to you? Will you be gifting a DVD this holiday season?

I don't buy them nearly as often as I used to a few years ago. Why? Because I know DVD is on its way out. Soon there will be a clear winner in the HD/Blu-Ray War and I really don't feel like having to buy all those movies over again much like I had to with my VHS tapes. Yes, I know both HD players are backwards compatible, but if I have the choice between buying "Buckaroo Banzai" on standard DVD now or wait 2 years and get it on the winning HD format, I'll wait. So I'm limiting my purchases now to films that I think are really excellent and have great re-watchability (as if that were a word) in the more immediate future.

Honestly, I don't think the winner will be Blu-Ray or HD DVD. The idea of buying a box and then buying discs to stick in the box is really outmoded. I think the next generation will be some sort of high-def download system similar to the iTunes Store/AppleTV. Until that system arrives, I am renting.

RichardinLA - I completely agree. I use Netflix but I find watching online more and more. I think that disc/disk format has gone through such a range. I remember in the 80 with the super movie disc that were larger than a album and then it went to beta tapes, vhs, mini, DVD and I think BR or HD will die just like the previous versions of media. Online is the future.

I wrote about 2008 Technologies that we should watch in 2008 (read more...) and that 2008 will bring a challenge for Online, Broadcast and live.

And what about all those CDs I still have and never listen to because I have an old-skool iPod? What can I do with them all ?

I have never purchased a movie on DVD. I went straight from VCR to Netflix when I got rid of my TV and now watch rented DVDs on my Mac laptop. While Netflix has online movies, they don't have them for Mac yet.

I also never purchased a movie on video. I have never seen the point of owning a movie. The only video I ever purchased was one for my cat (birds.)

muser74-
there are all sorts of crafts you can do with old CDs and DVDs.
Take a few CDs/DVDs and some cord, glue discs back-to-back with the cord btwn them to make a reflective wind ornament to put on a tree or porch.

Or make furniture: http://www.gearfuse.com/a-chair-made-from-hundreds-of-cds/

Or a lamp: http://www.tcnj.edu/~jones37/cd.html

I have to say I still buy DVDs, CDs, Books and yes Records. I dont just buy all of these for the content, I buy them for their outward apperance/packaging. Being a Graphic Designer I love the designs of some of these products...now mind you I do buy for the content specifically but I love having something in my hands thats tangible. I like downloading content but it will never replace a tangible product for me. If the future all goes digital and no actual products it will be a cold cold world for me.
