News: HD DVD Players Selling Like Hotcakes

2007-11-7-toshibahddvd.jpg

Over 90,000 sold over the weekend. Due in part to both Walmart and Best Buy cutting the price of Toshiba's HD-A2 model to around $99 in sales over the weekend.

Gizmodo predicts that this is a ploy to move more units off the shelves in order to push the technology and make room for newer models. We'd guess it also has a lot to do with the upcoming holiday season and predicted chilly spending by consumers. Have you bought a new DVD player lately? Does $99 price tag make you want one? Or do you agree with Gizmodo, and think something bigger is coming down the pipes?

Looks like the format war's gonna continue for awhile.

At this price, why wait? I bought one from Amazon with the 5 free movies included. Most stores were already sold out when I checked last weekend. If a blu-ray player ever drops below $200, I'd probably get that too. It's all about the movies, forget the format war.

There's always newer and better technology coming along, but you can sit on the sidelines forever.

Of course it's meant to move product off the shelves. It benefits Wal-Mart (increased traffic), Toshiba (older models sold to make room for the A3) and the HD consortium to advance the format adoption. The thing that's not being noted is how poorly the product was selling before the price cut.
Gizmodo says something about how Toshiba wasn't involved in or behind the price cut. Don't believe it. They had to be, just as Panasonic was behind the plasma price cuts the past two holiday seasons. Wal-Mart doesn't take losses, at least not entirely. Their vendor partners do.

This is PR spin from the HD folks. Watch for a similar release early next week from the Blueray side after the price drop of PS3 systems last week. (The built in player within the PS3 being a major driver of the format).

In my opinion, the smart money is still on Blueray. HD is the pooch bet.

This article from the UK says so.
