Rejoice! True Wireless Power is Here

100509_wireless_power.jpgReady for some news that'll really blow your mind? Sony's pretty much done what many of us at Unplggd have been dreaming about all these years; the ability to charge and power your electronics through the air. Now, if that didn't get your attention, we don't know what will. More info awaits you, after the jump.

From PC World:

"Despite the numerous technologies that exist for sending data through the air there's one cable that most gadgets can't do without at some time. The power cable remains a necessary but sometimes unsightly part of many modern electronic appliances -- but now even that might be on the way out.

Sony has developed a prototype power system that can send enough electricity to power a television set wirelessly over a short distance, it said Friday. In tests the company succeeded in sending a conventional 100 volt electricity supply over a distance of 50 centimeters to power a 22-inch LCD television....

...Sony's announcement on Friday was of development of the basic technology for the system. As such there are no details on when it might reach the commercialization stage and begin appearing in products."

While we're downright excited to hear the news, we do have concerns about energy efficiency of the system. Like any wireless device, there may still be dropouts and packet loss, though we imagine with electricity it'd be called something completely different. Still, we're pretty stoked about the news and can't wait to see some products on the market within the next few years.

What do you guys think about this wireless electricity business? Is it too much heat to handle? Let us know in the comments!

Am I the only one that has this weird paranoia that we're all going to end up with brain cancer from this sort of technology? Heh.

Wouldn't that mean the AIR around those devices (and you) would be electrically charged? I see that being a problem.

Here you will find a very interesting lecture about this subject. http://www.ted.com/talks/eric_giler_demos_wireless_electricity.html

After that you will see that you won't get brain cancer from this and also you will not be electrically charged.

The main problem is the bad efficiency of wireless power: only about 60%...!

Hoping this technology (at this efficiency) would be banned as soon as possible!
