What Does a Unibody iPod Mean For Us?

041009_tf_ipodpatent.jpgRemember when Apple took the leap to stop producing those black and white plastic MacBooks and start producing aluminum unibody starter laptops? Well it looks like they might be taking the same path with the mixed-metal classic iPod. According to a patent application that was recently released and posted on Ubergizmo, Apple wants to explore making unibody iPods. Sounds cool, right? But what does it mean for the consumers...

If Apple decides to take the same successful road as they did with the MacBook, it would mean we are bound to see aluminum unibody iPods on the market in the future. Alumninum, as opposed to the plastic that the white and black macbooks were made of and the stainless steel used in iPods, is thinner and lighter for the size, with the added advantage of being resistant to everyday damage from scratches and stains.

The biggest difference might be that it'll be impossible to break apart. Sturdyness is of course a good thing, but with a unibody iPod, gone are the days of the at-home tech surgery that those out-of-warranty owners are prone to try.

Since there's no way I could have fixed a walkman if it broke, this doesn't bother me.

The scratch-resistant coating is certainly a bonus, though. If I ever feel the need to upgrade it'll be nice.

matters not. I'm no more likely to buy it cause this' made from one piece of metal. who cares except fanboys easily impressed. Now if it had more features maybe.

someone will find a way to open it

The use of terms like "fanboy" is just another form of mindless bigotry or plain mindlessness. Eliminating the 2d sentence, provides the opinion without the snark.

sorry but fanboy isn't a bigotted term but it appears you seem to be the very sort of fanboy impressed by a useless feature. Don't care if i offend. And sorry you can't handle snarkiness. Grow a pair and get out of mom's basement. How ya like that for snark.

as long as they don't use glue, you can pull it apart, they have to put it together some how.
