PB Grand Cordless Phone

2007-03-04-pbphonedet.jpgTech Chic? Pottery Barn's Vintage Cordless Phone offers a unique twist on an old style. You can incorporate a vintage look into your decor, without sacrificing your mobility.

We're curious what the handset keypad actually looks like, as there are no pictures on the site.

However, Pottery Barn claims that it has all of the modern features of a standard telephone. And while it looks lovely in their mock room, we wonder whether the phone retains its predecessor's charm or rather resembles a movie prop.

Has anyone tried this phone? Is it eye candy or is it actually a well-designed and functional telephone?

Find it here for $129.

This is also a spin-off of a very camp and funny idea that came out last year.

The concept was a black, 1950's rotary phone, complete with original rotary dial, coiled cord and bells and it was converted to a CELL PHONE.

I know that the keypad is white buttons with black numbers on them with stainless steal details. I almost bought one but instead found (a non-cordless) a vintage model.
But if anyone has tried this phone I would love to know how you like it?

Pottery Barn is guilty of many sins in my humble (industrial designer's) opinion... greatest of which is their penchant for selling a faux family lifestyle: from wooden tables with contrived (and controlled) wear marks and chips that say, 'my family has eaten at this table for years', to 'hand stitched' made-in-china throws that say, 'my grandmother made this for me'. It makes me sad to think that there is a real market for this.
This phone ooks me in a similar way: it has the charm of an antique that makes the buyer look like they collect and care about a time that was serene and simple, yet its purpose is entirely otherwise.
Not to say that there isn't a great tongue-in-cheekiness about the thing... but c'mon, it's Pottery Barn: likely they didn't see the humour.
