Quickie Roundup: Coolest, Cheapest Television Cabinets

101308_an_best_tvstand.jpgOur motto here at Unplggd goes a little something like this: "Spend on the things you can, but do the opposite when it comes to saving." TV stands, for example, need not be fancy aluminum or tempered glass when you can get a decent one for hundreds less. Here's our quick roundup of a some TV stands that won't leave a gaping hole in your wallet, leaving you plenty of room to splurge on other things, like a Playstation 3.

101308_an_best_tvstand2.jpgIKEA's TV solutions have always been plentiful and you can get a really cheap, sturdy one for around $70-$150. Pictured above the IKEA Stockholm TV Stand.

101308_an_best_tvstand3.jpgA personal favorite is the IKEA PS cabinet for $100. Its red vibrant industrial look gives a punch of fun into a sleepy living lacking colors. Plus, the aluminum slits help dissipate heat better than a closed cabinet would.

101308_an_best_tvstand4.jpgOr, if you're really looking to spend very little, consider a DIY project. Some guys at Home Theater Forum used some PVC pipe and wood to make a stand for under $50.

Have a cheap TV stand idea to share? We'd love to hear it!

I have the IKEA PS cabinent holding up a 50" plasma TV weighing about 100 pounds (along with my DVR, DVD player and Wii, plus some t-shirts inside) - it's sturdy.

Plus, the IKEA PS cabinet will dissipate heat more rapidly than others because it's metal, therefore more conductive and non-insulating.

How can you use your remote with the IKEA PS? I love its look, and think a white one will be great in my loft but I change a lot of channels, and between different video sources. How do you do it? Do you leave the door open always?

we've been using the leaning desk/workstation stand from crate and barrel for our 32" LCD. using the shelves for components, cable management along the back of the side rails and various books and boxes to cover the wall plates.

what model is the one in the "glamor" shot above? looks like an ikea lack, but larger... able to accommodate a 17in component.

Any idea if you could take the doors off the IKEA PS and replace with frosted glass? Would like my remotes to work and not have to have the doors open. TIA!
