I'm not real big on itunes - I know some people love it but I personally think there is better out there. This article compares itunes, wmp, winamp and media monkey:

Media Player Classic Home Cinema is way better than VLC.

I'm no lawyer but I have to wonder how on earth they/you got the idea that dvdshrink is legal. I'm sure this particular program's legality hasn't been tested in court, but in general breaking the encryption on dvds is completely illegal. Surely you've wondered why no major company makes dvd rippers, like itunes rips cds but not dvds.
