Roundup: Top Five Computer Related Pet Peeves

080808_sz_techtard.jpg A couple weeks ago we had a conversation with another ATer, who shall remain nameless, about our tech pet peeves. It started when said ATer mentioned his sister's insistance on typing in the "www" prefix before every website.

We then started listing all the computer related things people do that drove us up the wall. After the break a list of some of the worst...

  1. Going to the Google page (or god forbid another search engine) rather than using the search bar on the upper right hand corner of the web browser. 080808_sz_googlesearch.jpg
  2. Using the mouse to close windows or quit apps, rather than using key commands like Apple+W.
  3. Creating new windows in browsers rather than taking advantage of tabs.
  4. Having way too many icons on the desktop. Hello bad Feng Shui!
  5. Scrolling via scroll bar instead of mouse wheel or keyboard.

Do you have a pet peeve to add to the list?

i just taught my s/o how to use Shift arrow keys to select multiple songs in iTunes to drag them all to her iPod at once, instead of going through song by song. yikes.

i hate when people use the mouse to click the next box, instead of using the tab key.

These are all things that affect only a single user. I can ignore them, as long as nobody's making me do them.

When people click minimize on all their open applications to get to the desktop. Just put the "show desktop" button on the taskbar!

I have one pet peeve to add... tech snobs. Part of my job is helping the people who suck at the internets; they just don't have the time to put into their technology or they just haven't had the education.

An aside, I love that pic! Grr! Ha ha!

Wow. I bet you'd have less pet peeves if you started MINDING YOUR OWN BUSINESS.
Or simply keep your eyes on your own screen. :P

Maybe some people occasionally (or always) like the gratification of clicking the little "x" box or red circle to close a window.

And in line with damask, that picture is awesome! :)

I have several older relatives and co-workers who insist on typing whole web addresses into Google (i.e., "www.yahoo.com") , hitting search, and then clicking the *same address* when it pops up as the first result.

This is not so much a peeve, as much as it something that just completely baffles me.

I have the habit of typing "www" b/c back in Ye Ol' Days of the internet, several of the non-US/smaller webpages that I visited did not come up unless you typed the "www".

And I have a habit of not using the google search box b/c shared computers frequently store/autocomplete those search terms. I'm private/paranoid like that though.

I have to agree with previous posters that this pet peeve list is kinda weird. I thought that the complaints would be more along the lines of "no matter how many times I show her, Grandma still doesn't understand double clicking".

If the problem was with people who insist on saying the www when telling you about a website, I could totally understand (not to mention when people still stumble through saying the whole "http colon slash slash" part). But some extra typing? That I don't have to do? Not my biggest concern.

I use a Wacom Tablet at work and I hate it when someone has to do something on my machine and they get their sweaty hand grease all over my tablet.

I am perfect and don't have sweaty hands.

...and when people touch the screen too, WTF? Just Point to it!

I agree with Sparkle. I think people should mind their own business. Seriously, how petty is caring about niggling little ways in which people use their computer? What does it have to do with you?

This whole post smacks of tech snobbery. I don't fit any of your peeves, but I also don't care if other people are less efficient than I. It's not a race. It's not a competition. It's just using the computer.

I used to hate it when people touched the screen, but that is changing for me- I use a tablet pc and touching the screen is part of computing. So now when I see someone touching other screens, it doesn't bother me... as long as its with their hands.
I would say that using a mac is a pet peeve of mine. Not really, but I am not a fan of the UI. The efficiency; yes, a big fan- just not the interface. I always said that I would switch when apple comes out with a tablet, and that time is coming- http://www.unplggd.com/unplggd/rumor_mill_new_macbook_touch_c-57245

People who don't use the Control-S, Control-C, Control-V, etc.... It is such a waster of time to not use short-cuts.

I have a co-worker who always asks me for help with MS Office related tasks. Many times, I don't know the answer off the top of my head, but can find it in ten seconds flat by USING THE HELP FUNCTION. She's always amazed. I've done it in front of her, made reference to where I always find the answers, etc., yet she still interupts my work to ask me things that are SO easily looked up in help. Grr...

Gawd. I was with you until the feng shooei bit. If I never had to hear that term again, it would still be too soon.

Ah, ami Ye Ol' Days ...
Having to type in "www." was a drag, but having to say it (or hear someone else say it) really hurt. I mean it's 9 syllables!
And do you remember, in Ye Ol' Ol' Days we had to type in "http://" too!
