It kind of makes sense in a metaphorical way: We use seat belts to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe while we're riding in cars. Why couldn't we use seat belts, manufactured to of course include all tastes with colors of the rainbow, to keep our beautiful (ahem—and expensive) cameras safe?
Seat belt camera straps from the Photojojo.com store look wildly retro and as an added bonus can show off a little green attitude. Each one is made from a reclaimed seatbelt.
Handmade by Souldier, who's made guitar straps for Wilco and TV on the Radio, they're 2" wide and can stretch to 3 1/2 feet long.
Besides being "super strong" and "super funky," these belts can color-coordinate. They come one for $20 or two for $35 in your choice of the wonderfully retro colors of Porsche Purple, Mercedes Gold, T-bird Teal, and Dodge Silver. If you have a camera that you treat like a baby, get it some human-grade protection here and buckle up your camera!

The strap is pretty. However, the part that attaches to the body is the exact same as the one that comes with the camera which provides a false sense of security. My strap slipped right out of the camera body causing my D40X to smack against the pavement, lens first. I would like to find a metal clip that would attach the seat belt to the loop on the camera body.

I like those! In regards to art's issue with the camer strap slipping off...I put a pin through my straps to secure them - the kind of pins you wear on lapels or hats. Not only is it functional, it also ads a personal touch to my camera.

Hey Art, you must be a novice or something. I only use Souldier camera strasp with the nonskid padding they have at Souldier Camera Straps And my set up is heavy as I shoot for National Geographic and I shoot on many cliffs and glaciers. Strongest strap out there. I didn't by it because it was pretty. I bought it because the loops are thick and it's recycled seatbelt and made in America. Compare the loops with that which comes with most cheap straps. The Souldier loops are much thicker, almost hard to fasten and adjust as it's that thick, no way it would slip. I bought everybody in my crew a Souldier seatbelt camera strap and no problems in every weather condition.
