Unclutterer: Shelving Your CD Collection

2007-05-14stackofcds.jpgWhat do you do when you have 1,500 CDs, and you want to keep them?

Over at Unclutterer, they're addressing a Home Tech-type problem we wanted to share with you, because some of you may be facing the same issue: what to do when you want to keep your massive collection of CDs?

Of course you can rip them and file them away on your computer (don't forget backups!) and stash the CDs. They include a number of different options within their post, but in this case, there's something to be said for actually being able to browse the collection, in which case the editors at Unclutterer suggested the AVthing In Its Place store (we thought that was clever, too!) that's part of Amazon.com for shelves to hold such a massive collection.

If you have some cash to throw around, i highly recommend the modular cabinets from Can-Am for this (i use it to hold my ~1700 piece CD collection)

My biggest issue was losing the art, then I found these

they save an incredible amount of space.

Rip 'em to a lossless audio format (using Exact Audio Copy if you have a PC), use a wireless media receiver to play 'em (like the Squeezebox) or an AirPort Express and iTunes or MediaMonkey, and file the originals away, either in their original cases or in those jewelsleeves mentioned up above.

I bought custom-made CD bookcases from an unfinished pine furniture place, then stained them myself with charcoal gray water-based stain (wipe on with a rag, no smell, dry in under two hours). I bought two. Each one holds about 750 CDs, and cost around $75, including delivery and stain.

Previously, I had a revolving CD tower. It held a lot--around 1,000 CDs--and had a tiny footprint, but the weight of the CDs wore out the turntable base after a year or two.

i just sold four cds on amazon in the last few days. :-) it is worth the little purge and few bucks earned. plus, it takes the sting off of my guilt for buying so many things on ebay recently. :-D
