New Apple TV in 2008?

2007_12_13 apple-tv-2k8-revamp.jpg

While we have one in our house, we don't use it nearly as much as we thought we would. For us the Apple TV turned out to be the modern day slide projector. Our main use case is for sharing our digital photos with friends and family. Will a rumoured updated version change this? IPTV by Apple? Only time will tell...

I don't understand.

Why couldn't one show all digital media from their Mac on a digital tv via a dvi to hdmi cable?

Because AppleTV only works with media that is consumable in iTunes (out of the box). It is possible to hack the AppleTV to support many more media types and work around the limitations of Apple's implementation. But by design it is a very restricted product. It fits well with Apple's philosophy of simplicty and building a walled-garden media ecosystem where they officially only support Apple content, or personal content that has been converted to Apple approved formats.
