#15 - Shannon's Retro Chic

Name: Shannon
Location: Brooklyn, NY
A/V or Home Office: A/V

Favorite Source: For ideas, old Popular Mechanics magazines. I love their DIY optimism and sheer geekiness. For stuff, Apple. They make the sort of smart, durable, functional, beautiful, and human-centered technology that I love.

What inspired you? I’m inspired by last century’s idea of the future. My Harmon Kardon tube amplifier from the 1960’s still gives a rich, round sound, and I’m fascinated by its “Ambiance” knob. Its function is a mystery, but I keep it on Max anyhow.

Another prize is a toy called a Flashy Flicker, also from the 60’s, which is basically a toy gun with a flashlight and slide viewer, and I also have several old typewriters. All this was once cutting-edge technology that still works today. Some modern technology seems cold, but I think my A/V room feels inviting and playful.

Great Tip: When it comes to TVs, small is cool. Don't let the box overwhelm your space.

Size matters, and when it comes to TV, smaller is better. (You gotta sit close to read subtitles though...)
