apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#5 - Kate's Unconventional Angles

Name: Kate
Location: Honolulu, HI
A/V or Home Office: Home Office

Favorite Source:

Why, Apartment Therapy, of course! Even if I can't afford or get anything featured on the site, I'll often ask myself "how can I replicate that?"

What inspired you?

I suppose I should say most of my inspirations come from my mother. She loves bold colors everywhere, and even in her office she always has bright clipboards, sticky notes, and highlighters--as a result, I love being surrounded by bright color everywhere. She also taught me to approach everything from unconventional angles, which is how I wound up with my entire filing system and cable storage climbing my walls.

Since I also got a terrible memory from my mom, I need to see any open projects or pieces of tech right in front of me, or else I'll forget it exists.

Great Tip:

Velcro tape works very, very well to keep items organized which you have to move around frequently. My on the wall iPod dock is done with velcro tape, and I store my Apple Remote the same way.

Color coded bookcase! :)

Hanging the CD reams is a clever idea, though I'm not sure I like them right there. Still, I like the full room view, it's colorful, organized, and nice looking.

I know it's early in the voting stages for this entry but I see that consensus is leaning toward the opinion that it is a space that simply "gets the job done." I disagree. It is obvious that Kate has put a lot of thought into designing an efficient workspace where everything is at her fingertips. While it isn't sleek like some other spaces we've seen, I think it's got a lot of originality and creative ways to use the space. I especially love the CD spindles on the wall and the bookshelf arranged by color. These two things alone make this an "insta-finalist" in my book.

I like your wall storage ideas, and I can imagine a very imaginative CD wall display. Keeps the work space cleaner too. I would definitely need more lighting options though.

echoing Jenifer's sentiments. This is more about unique organization and how the utility and aesthetic solution comes together in a small space than just having great products lined up nicely with cords hidden.

Looks really nice, I like the couch next to it way more though. Blue makes for a much brighter day.

came too this contest too late to vote for this one, so it doesn't seem fair to vote for anyone now...

But anyway, I agree with previous posters-- it's not "cool" but this is the first entry from which I will be stealing ideas! (I'm a renter, so I can't knock out walls to hide cords, or properly mount my flat panel tv)

thanks kate!!

saya*,

You should still vote when you want to, since the ones who've voted so far haven't all committed (nor will they all be able) to vote for each and every single entry....

hi Kate,

I am too late to vote for you, unfortunately, but I think your set up is nice and tidy. I'm always battling a cluttered desk area, and have been trying to put more things up on the walls to help with that problem, so I appreciate what you've done in your space.

QUESTION: how did you attach your disc spindles to the wall? I would like to try that!
