#7 - Laura's Breezy Micro Home Office

Name: Laura R.
Location: Chicago, IL
A/V or Home Office: Home Office (actually just a desk in my dining room)

Favorite Source: I'm a big CB2 fan, the dining room table you see in the wider shot is from there. I also recently discovered Broadway antique market for unique mid-century pieces.

What inspired you? I love the look of storage that is both open and closed, like the Eames Storage Units. For my desk I didn't want the heavy look of a solid form but needed to hide most things from view.

Using several smaller boxes allows me plenty of storage while keeping things divided enough that they aren't impossible to find.

Great Tip: To hide the messy computer cords I just staggered the boxes beneath my desk- the lower box sticks out more to create an area behind it for cords, which the top box hides.

Not sure how Hi-tech this is... and that bench can't be very comfortable to sit on for a long period of time.

I must be missing the point of this competition, I haven't seen anything that fits my description of small and cool yet.

However, this is the first set up the has and any resonance with me as being remotely unique or thoughtful, so I'm giving it full marks.

Thanks Phaedrus! I think my space is definitely small, I guess how cool it is is up for debate!

Derek- not the most high-tech thing in the world but contains all of the technical elements that I use for my work as a graphic designer - a powerbook and a digital camera.

I like the idea of the little bench to sit on. For how long is it comfortable? 20 minutes, 40 minutes? Do you put a cushion on it if you're going to sit longer?

Obviously a wooden bench is not the ideal thing to sit on for a long time... maybe she only works briefly at the desk.
But I think if someone designed and marketed an ergonomically-correct desk chair that doesn't look like an office chair, it would be very successful. So many people work at home now, but who wants a commercial-looking office chair in their dining room, bedroom, etc? It's like having a fax machine on your dining room table (which I'm sure some people have also). A nice domestic-looking chair that also supports your back, arms, is adjustable, etc.... does such a thing already exist?

This is terrific if you're only going to be on the computer briefly - but it can't be at all comfortable if you're going to sit there awhile. It's a nice use of a corner space, though.

I actually sit on the bench all day, no cushion! Guess I'm weird, it has never bothered me. It's actually supposed to be a side table.

BrooklynRob the point you bring up is exactly why I have it, I didn't want a big office chair in my dining/living area, right now the office area blends in but that would not be the case with a different chair.

I'd replace the bench with a wheeled file cube: http://www.charleskeath.com/product-2/92739.htm

Thanks for the look, Kate, I'm considering the same desk for it's tiny footprint!
