Groan, another operating system. It seems like just yesterday we were talking about Tiger. Last week, Apple introduced their latest iteration of Mac OSX, Leopard. Due to be released in October 2007.
We ususally get sucked in by the quirky new features, we'll admit it, we bought Tiger because of the widgets. But what really struck us about Leopard was the new interface for navigating your files. First, Apple has upgraded Finder to allow you to scroll through your files just like you can scroll through albums on iTunes. Just like digging through a stack of papers, you'll be able to visually associate with the contents of your computer.
The next addition we really loved was Quick Look, a way of previewing a file's contents without having to open it within a program. Imagine being able to peek at any type of file without having to actually load up any software.
And their latest addition to simple file browsing, is the addition of Time Machine, a quick and easy way to back up and retrieve lost files. Anything you've ever worked on (as long as you've set it up to back up regularly) is within your grasp in seconds. It looks like Apple has taken some of the work out of the annoying task of backing up data, and provided us with an easy way to find it is that we are looking for.
As a long-time Apple user/fan, I'm kinda excited for Leopard, if not for the fact that...
- A. At least one new feature is not a few feature. The whole stacks thing can already be done if put a folder in the dock and simply hold down the mouse key; you get a preview of the contents anyhow. I'm sorry, it's not as pretty...
- B. I guess I'm most annoyed by how virtually 90% of Mac's out there are not going to be able to handle all these fancy tricks, which for the most part are just 90% graphical, 10% functional. Apple did an AWESOME job making sure Panther worked on old-ish machines, and then promptly dropped the ball with Tiger, and for no apparent reason. Speaking off...
- C. Like most Mac users, those of us who don't have souped up Intel machines, downloaded iTunes 7 and realized what a stupid resource hog it is, primarily due to the scrolling through album art. Which isn't so special to begin with. I don't even want to think about a whole OS built around such a feature.
- D. Time Machine sounds awesome on paper, but if I need a drive the equivalent size of what I have, I use three 200 gig hard drives, well... though that's more of a personal quibble more than anything else.
