PS3 Media Server: A Great Tversity Alternative

For those who don't know, we're big fans of multi-purposing home tech here. Whether it be a DIY project turning your pencil eraser into a USB thumbdrive or creating a free media streaming hub from your Playstation 3, if there's a will, there's a way. Speaking of media streaming on the PS3, however, we've just recently stumbled on a very, very nice alternative to Tversity, especially with its lower resource consumption and no hassles of installing any codecs of any kind. So let us tell you something about lossless streaming from your PC, Mac, or Linux box. It's a media-phile's dream. We want to be able to turn on our PC, install a program, and let media streaming work itself out without errors. That is, almost, everything PS3 Media Server is.

After searching hours and hours for a streaming program that would work well without the hassles of introducing tons of codecs onto his computer just to get it to run properly, the French developer figured he'd just write his own program to do just that. No codec headaches. No registry modification. Nothing. Just install and run (kinda like VLC).

We tried it out on our own PC to PS3 and it works marvelous, especially if you're connected via LAN. If you're going to attempt Wi-Fi, we suggest lowering the Maximum bandwidth rate to "15" under Common encoder settings. Of course this means your 1080p action movies won't be the best quality at 15Mbps, but hey - it's now even easier to get media streaming on your computer to your PS3. Who's to argue with that.

By the way, did we mention it supports Linux as well? That's multiplatform for ya.

Hands down THE choice if you're going to play with media server software. Tversity wasn't bad - when it actually worked, but this little app trumps it in almost all ways. It just *works*, so say bye-bye to ridiculously difficult and needlessly complicated Tversity and give it a try.
