Yamaha YST001 Speakers with Ambient Lighting

061208YST001_2.jpgYamaha recently announced the YST001 (shown below the jump), speakers with three integrated halogen lamps of 25W that can be dimmed and lit via remote control. We immediately thought this was a great DIY project to emulate using the speakers we already have and some affordable lighting from IKEA...

The Yamaha speakers' ambient lighting system can be dimmed to 20% brightness, while the speakers themselves have a 70Hz - 35kHz response, and will set you back about $1,250 when available.

061208IKEADIODER02.jpgHere are some impressive examples of the what the multi-colour IKEA Dioder LED lights can do posted on the VDR Portal discussion boards. A lot less expensive and will use less power when comparing LED versus halogen. Of course, this DIY solution must be manually changed for different colours and doesn't adjust to the picture on the screen like the Phillips Ambilight system. But at $39.99, it's not a bad way to backlight your screen or speakers for mood lighting (our plan).
