Do You Plan to Purchase an eReader This Year?
Survey

012110_ereaders.jpgAs Internet radio and eBook readers hit an all time high in popularity, we were curious how many of our readers out there actually have plans on throwing down for an eReader this year. We know we're definitely on the fence about it, but all the hype has us mighty curious...

According to L.E.K.’s Media Consumption Survey, which polled over 2,000 consumers, eReaders are certainly a big deal this coming year, with older folks are into the Internet, and online radio is finally reaching the mainstream.

Among the stats:

* 32% of users listen to an average of 5.8 hours of Internet radio a week, a huge jump.
* iPod owners consume 8.9 hours of media per week while e-reader owners consume 18.2 hours of new media per week. That means e-readers have a captive audience.
* Folks aged 50-64 use 8.3 hours of Internet per week compared to 24-39 year olds who use it for 6.8 hours.

We dunno about you guys, but we think the eReaders' time has arrived! We plan on grabbin' a DX the next time it goes on sale!

i would love one, but right now they are too pricey.

i love the green concept of these, but would like more cross platform functionality.

If someone makes a color version and puts some good magazine content on there, I would consider it. But for fiction and non-fiction tomes? No, I still like books.

I didn't think I'd want one but then ended up getting a Kindle a few months ago, and I LOVE it. I read way more than I did before because it's always in my bag, it's very easy to read one handed on the subway or in bed, it's just the best. My shelves are too full and now I don't have to worry about selling used books to make room, and the price of ebooks makes reading more economical in the long run. And it's greener. Despite the fact that I am a print designer and don't want to see the print industry die - I am loving the Kindle.

No No No A thousand times No. Hardcopy books forever!

Furthermore, It's not that I just prefer the tactile experience of reading a hardcopy book....I also equally enjoy the experience of searching a bookstore, big or small, for the unexpected novel that changes my life. A Nook or similar device funnels us further into a marketing vortex where the pleasures of stumbling upon a book are sacrificed to suggestive sales and focus group marketing. No thanks.

I'm with bookstorm and szeplany. Nothing beats a searching through a bookstore even ordering on line. I love the smell, touch and covers of books also the contents.

No way. I adore my books.

Truth be told, I'm torn. I'm an avid reader, and there isn't a room in my home (save for the bathroom) that doesn't prominently feature books. Plus, I spend too much time already staring at screens. (I even told my girlfriend not to get me a Kindle when she was fishing for Xmas ideas.) Yet, since I take the subway to work, an e-reader would make my commuting/reading life so much easier. I've just started last year's Cheever bio, but it's simply too heavy and cumbersome to carry and hold on a crowded train. I dunno. I love the tactile experience of reading a book, but it's hard to ignore the convenience of a e-reader. Maybe next year. Or the year after that.

szeplany, If you travel a lot and read a lot an ebook reader is just the thing you need. You can carry hundreds of books with you (even abroad). They don't take your books away from you just because you are not in the US, it just may be difficult to buy new books depending on the ereader. Tons of ereaders do work abroad. One of the best ereaders is produced in France (the Cybook).

I would love to get an eReader, but I'm waiting for one that can read multiple formats. I won't get a kindle b/c it won't allow loading of library eBooks.

Sone for the win. Those who say they are tired of staring at screens - the e-ink screen is a wholly different beast that doesn't tire eyes.

If I could get an eReader to put my textbooks on, then I would be on board. Unfortunately, I don't think that the textbook companies would go for that...

yeah, i would definitely get one if I could just buy e-book versions of my textbooks...however that would mess up the courses where the prof says its open book tests. hmmm

When I can loan and borrow books for it I will consider it. If I didn't know that the books will vanish into thin air when Kindles are no longer supported I would also consider it.
But they will. I have 100 year-old books, I'll be shocked if we still have Kindles in 5 years.
