Survey: Computers in the Kitchen?

2007_03_27 kitchen computer.gif

It seems that a few years ago even Martha Stewart advocated computers in the kitchen to Wired Magazine. So we are curious to see what our AT readers have to say about this. Comments welcome.

my kitchen's too small, plus i don't cook so there's no need for my lappy to be in there.

Me too, the laptop. Previous to the laptop, I had this bright idea to hook up my old computer, which was pretty powerful, to the tv so that I could have slide shows on, browse the internet, have gaming possibilities, etc., as the tv in the kitchen is recessed into the wall and is 36" and the tv had some sort of connection to allow that. It was hardly used this way, too much trouble to transfer it over from tv to monitor, forgetting the steps each time, etc., so that idea died. I still really like the idea of slide shows of my garden being on the tv at Thanksgiving for example, but football wins out, so I made it happen and it really wasn't used. I am designing a kitchen right now where there will be a dedicated spot for a computer, but that is really unusual. Who wants to sit 2' in front of a wall in the kitchen? Flexibility is better.

Of course. I have my blueberry iBook there. I listen to iTunes, surf (including looking for recipes), and sometimes iChat. I will soon be moving my iMac G4 there and giving the iBook away. Have I mentioned that I have a new 24" iMac? :)

Isn't this what laptops are for?

I would hate to give up any counter space, even to a laptop. How about one hanging from the upper cabinets? All my recipes are on my computer, and right now I go from kitchen to computer a lot. I tried printing the recipe as I need it, but it is such a waste of paper.

My computer is right next to my kitchen. The kitchen is too tiny with less than 6 ft of useable countertop so it can't go in there. I thought having the computer in the kitchen area was going to be a short term issue while we did some re wiring, but I love it here and I think it's here to stay.

Just one of the happy reasons why I have a wireless router for my laptop. But have a dedicated kitchen computer? I don't think I'd do that even if I had space.

our laptop (& printer) is in our kitchen! at least that's where we keep it when we're not taking advantage of the wireless... we moved into a place with a dining room, so we decided to put our "home office" in a space that was too small for a kitchen table. plus, i wanted to keep the electronics out of the dining room & bedroom areas (the living/tv room can't be avoided, i guess).

we also bought a stainless, counter height table (udden console)from ikea to act as a desk, so that it still has a kitchen feel, but doesn't take away from the valuable counter space. but it has been great for looking at recipes online and also listening to itunes or catching up on e-mail.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm with most of you and use a laptop in the kitchen as well, although my perfect setup would be to hang an iMac on the wall and have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse tucked into a drawer underneath so that I could pull it out when needed and not take up any valuable counter space.

That is exactly what laptops are for.

Back in the late 1980s, we had a 600-sq-ft apartment with an incongruously huge kitchen with southern light, and I did put the desk and desktop computer in the kitchen for a while. I don't think I ever stored a recipe on it, though -- it was just a pleasant place to work.
